Pat Gilroy gets off to losing start in charge as Galway topple Dublin in Fenway Classic
THE Pat Gilroy era got off to a losing start today in Boston’s Fenway Park as Dublin were beaten by All-Ireland champions Galway in the first of the AIG Fenway Classic semi-finals.
After initially struggling to come to grips with the amended rules, Galway took an early lead and their victory came largely thanks to an outstanding goalkeeping performance from Colm Callanan.
Danny Sutcliffe captained Dublin in what was his first game for exactly two years and scored an early five-pointer, the reward for a goal scored outside the 20 metre line.
Cillian Costello and Daithí Burke were sin-binned in the 10th minute after referee, Johnny Ryan, consulted video referee Donal O’Grady following a scuffle behind one of the goals while Shane Maloney suffered a similar fate in the second half for a high hit on Dublin goalkeeper Stephen Chester.
Galway led 29 to 22 at half-time and went further ahead in the second-half thanks to three five-pointers in quick succession from top scorer, Jason Flynn.
Callanan pulled off a string of outstanding saves and late scores from Padraig Brehony and Conor Cooney put the All-Ireland champions through to this evening’s final against Clare or Tipperary, scheduled to start 3.0 local time.
