The county's footballers might have suffered a surprise loss, but there was no stopping the Kerry hurlers in Newbridge.

Managed by Kildare native Fintan O'Connor, the Kingdom took a while to hit full stride in the opening 20 minutes, with James Burke pushing Kildare 0-6 to 0-5 ahead with his fourth free of the game.

Thereafter the home side were a distant second best as Kerry took control.

With Brendan O'Leary, Shane Conway and Shane Nolan leading the way in attack, Kerry scored the last six points of the half to lead 0-11 to 0-6 at the break.

Things didn't get any better for Kildare in the second-half and having lost James Burke to injury, Bernard Deay and half-time sub Paul Divilly limped out of the action.

The Kerry defence were marshalled by the excellent Mikey Boyle and O'Leary put the seal on the Kerry win in the 69th minute as he found the net.
