O'Hanlon red card takes gloss off victory
Wexford 2-17 IT Carlow 1-13
Wexford's opening victory of the year was dampened by the straight red-carding of team captain Matthew O'Hanlon in this Walsh Cup first round clash at Bunclody on last Saturday.
O'Hanlon was red carded in the 53rd minutes following the intervention of an umpire and, after lengthy consultation, referee John Keenan decided to brandish the first red card of the season.
From the resulting penalty, Stephen Maher's rising shot went over for a point.
It was the only blot on the performance of Liam Dunne's side as a goal in each half from Cathal Dunbar and Shane Tomkins helped Wexford to a comfortable game played at a fast pace on a firm sod.
With Lee Chin dominant in midfield, and Tomkins, Ian Byrne and Liam Og McGovern sharp up front, Wexford led 1-9 to 0-4 at the interval, with Stephen Maher's pointed frees keeping Carlow in touch.
On the resumption a Jack Fagan goal in the 46th minute brought the Carlow college into the game, trailing 1-10 to 1-5.
But Wexford maintained their lead through Tomkins and Byrne's frees. They were leading 1-12 to 1-7, when full-back O'Hanlon was sent off on 53 minutes.
But despite this setback, Tomkins' 62nd minute goal from a superb McGovern crossfield ball sealed the issue.
