Derry took full advantage of the sending-off of Down defender Mark Patterson to win in Newry, where Slaughtneil's Cormac O'Doherty hit 0-10 - nine of them from placed balls.

The sides were level at 0-8 at the break, with Down forwards Dáithí Sands and Oisín MacManus hitting five points from play between them, while Paul Sheehan was on target with frees.

Derry won a penalty when Richie Mullan was fouled by Patterson, who was yellow carded, but O'Doherty's effort was saved by Stephen Keith.

It was still 0-10 apiece when Patterson picked up a second yellow in the 46th minute.

Alan Grant scored the only goal for Derry after 57 minutes.

New Derry manager John McEvoy, who started working with the panel only on January 6, commented: "I'm delighted with their attitude."
