O'Connor leads Model revenge mission
Wexford 5-15 Westmeath 1-12
Wexford avenged their shock defeat at the hands of Westmeath in last year's Leinster quarter-final by crushing their hosts in this first-round tie in Mullingar.
Westmeath started brightly and almost found the net in the opening minute, but they had to be content with a point by Sean Dowd from the resultant '65'.
However, an opportunist third-minute goal from Theo Doyle, after Rory O'Connor's free came back off the upright, put the visitors well on their way. A second goal from Andy Walsh in the 14th minute helped Wexford to a 2-8 to 0-4 interval lead.
Scores in the opening two minutes of the second half from Quinn Sanders, Rory O'Connor and Conor Hearne widened the gap to 13 points. Top scorer O'Connor soon pounced for a fine individual goal and with it any semblance of competition evaporated.
Further goals followed from Conor Hearne and substitute Danny Lynch.
Marcus Kennedy netted a penalty for Westmeath.
