NUI win Galway battle to book place in last eight of Fitzgibbon Cup
NUI Galway 0-17 GMIT 0-12
NUI Galway are into the Fitzgibbon Cup quarter finals where they will play the winners of tonight's Group A game between Cork IT and UCD.
John Paul O'Connell's side were too strong for their city rivals at Carnmore as eight points from Clare's Bobby Duggan and four from play from Galway's Cathal Mannion gave them their second win of the competition.
After last week's shock victory against UCC, there was plenty of updates flowing from the Mardyke, and news of UL snatching a late draw against UCC was greeted with cheers from the NUI Galway squad.
Only two points separated the sides at the interval, as GMIT trailed by 0-10 to 0-8, Tadhg Haran's six frees kept then in touch. NUIG on the other hand had six different scorers in that first period, and with Mannion and Westemath's Niall O'Brien proving particularly influential and they deserved their lead.
Duggan was the NUIG hero last week and his free shortly after the restart got his side three points to the good, before Mannion and O'Brien landed good points from play before Duggan's fifth free in the 36th minute put NUI Galway 0-14 to 0-9 ahead.
Haran was exquisite from dead balls though, and he kept GMIT in the game with scores in the 37th and 49th minutes.
Duggan proved he could convert form play too though with the point of the game from wide on the left seven minutes from time, and he wrapped it up with another free in the final minute.
The only sour note for NUI Galway came two minutes from the end when team manager O'Connell was sent from the line by Carlow referee David Hughes.
