Nothing to lose and everything to gain in Thurles decider

Waterford manager Derek McGrath
Waterford manager Derek McGrath

By John Mullane

The vast majority of Waterford hurling folk are delighted that next month's Munster hurling final has been fixed for Thurles. Once the Waterford players indicated that they wanted to play at Semple Stadium, this was the nod for Derek McGrath and his management team to say 'yes'.

There's a huge mutual trust between players and management and this is by no means a statement that Waterford are being in any way cocky.

It's simply a case that Waterford feel at 'home' in Thurles and its suitability as a venue, more than anything else, was the deciding factor.

As we've seen in the past, Cork teams and supporters always loved going to Thurles for Munster final day.

It's the home of hurling and has that unique attachment to all teams who play there.

Waterford have nothing to lose and everything to gain by playing in Thurles, where we have enjoyed so many great days of success.

This was a no-brainer.
