Brendan Murtagh's free-taking helped Westmeath to a narrow win against DCU in a competitive Walsh Cup opener played on the all-weather pitch at St Loman's Lakepoint Park in Mullingar yesterday.

The students' indiscipline gave Murtagh plenty of opportunities from placed balls and he converted all of his eight frees in the first half.

Westmeath looked marginally the better team throughout but when Sean Gray found the net from a 25-metre free in the 25th minute to level the game at 0-8 to 1-5. However, the home side scored five unanswered points before the break to lead by 0-13 to 1-5.

DCU started the second half impressively with four points without reply in the opening seven minutes.

Warren Casserly pounced for a well taken goal for Westmeath and four pointed frees from Murtagh had his side seemingly well in control by the end of the third quarter.

But the gap was down to four points (1-20 to 1-16) before Killian Murphy scored Westmeath's second goal with four minutes of normal time remaining.
