Murray hits 11 points to send Waterford through
Waterford 1-20 Tipperary 1-17
The Waterford minor hurlers rebounded from their first-round setback against Cork in determined fashion as they outfought Tipperary at a sunny Walsh Park on Saturday.
Man of the match Eoghan Murray shot 11 points for Stephen Gough's side to power them into the last four on June 29.
A crowd of 1,621 enjoyed an end-to-end tussle at the city ground. Tipperary led by three points on two occasions in the first half, but the hosts recovered to depart with a 0-11 to 1-6 advantage. Dillon Quirke found the net in the sixth minute after Lyndon Fairbrother gathered a Jake Morris sideline ball.
Waterford finished the half strongly. Murray scored six points (four from play) and Harry Ruddle converted three placed balls to nudge the Déise ahead.
The visitors opened brightly in the second period and quickly got back on level terms through Fairbrother, but Jack Prendergast and Murray allowed Waterford to wriggle free. On 43 minutes, Neil Montogomery reacted fastest when Ciaran Barrett saved a shot from Thomas Douglas and fired home the rebound (1-15 to 1-9). Four minutes later, Billy Nolan produced a fantastic stop to deny Quirke his second goal.
Fairbrother rattled off eight second-half points but couldn't reel in the home team. Murray completed a prolific afternoon with a delicious sideline cut in front of the stand, and Tipperary now travel to Clare next month for a knockout play-off clash.
