Murphy's law rules as Carlow punish Saffrons
Carlow 1-17 Antrim 1-11
Courageous Carlow moved up to second place in the Division 2A table courtesy of a deserved six-point win over a disappointing Antrim at Ballycastle yesterday.
The Barrowsiders led by 1-12 to 0-6 at the break, helped by a Martin Kavanagh goal after eight minutes.
The visitors began with more purpose and were 0-3 to no score.
Eddie McCloskey got the Saffrons off the mark but Kavanagh's major had Carlow 1-3 to 0-1 ahead. Antrim lost Barry McFall to a second yellow card on 19 minutes and the wind-assisted Carlow side made the most of the extra man, outscoring their hosts 0-7 to 0-3 in the second quarter.
Prolific freetaker Denis Murphy extended Carlow's lead to double figures just after the restart with Conor Johnston replying for the home side. Carlow made a number of changes and it was James Connolly who threw the Saffrons a lifeline when firing to the net on 52 minutes.
The Saffrons were enjoying their best spell of the game and when sub Michael Dudley and the impressive Johnston added scores, just four points separated the teams at 1-14 to 1-10. That was as good as it got for Antrim however and John Michael Nolan, Murphy and James Doyle wrapped up the points for Pat English's side.
