The expectation going in to this quarter-final in Newbridge on Saturday was that this would be a close affair.

Then came the news that the home side would have to do without the services of the Reidy brothers, David and Michael, who had been called upon by Limerick club Dromin Athlacca in their intermediate championship first round tie. Also missing was John Mulhall.

Yet despite the defections, it was tight in the opening 15 minutes, as the sides were tied at 0-4 each.

Then Carlow hit a purple patch, with Denis Murphy punishing Kildare with well-struck frees, and they led 0-14 to 0-7 at the interval.

With Conor Gordon picking up a second yellow on 39 minutes, it was more of the same after the break and Kildare looked to be going out without a fight.

Then Michael Purcell landed two points and Jack Sheridan also hit a brace.

Suddenly Kildare were within three points of their rivals and with 16 minutes left, the momentum seemed to be changing.

A Murphy free settled Carlow, while Kildare shot two wides. James Doyle scored the only goal of the game late on, when he took a pass from Marty Kavanagh to net from close range.
