McGrath leads way as UL stroll home
Univ of Limerick 2-23 Cork IT 0-16
Stephen Bennett and John McGrath goaled in the same minute as UL's drive for a second Fitzgibbon Cup in three years got off to a thundering start.
Brian Lohan's side were runners-up last season, but they looked like the team to beat as they swatted aside the Cork side.
Michael Kearney hit 11 points for CIT, but the brace of goals in the 13th and 14th minutes was followed by seven unanswered points as UL cantered to victory.
"It's a good start, but that CIT team is young this year," said Lohan. "There is ten or 12 teams that can win the Fitzgibbon any year and it's the same this year."
UL led by 2-13 to 0-9 at the interval, and with wind advantage in the second half, they might feel they should have bettered their ten-point return.
Kearney cut the lead to eight points, but the impressive Kevin Hehir, Bennett and Barry Nash made sure of the win.
