Andy Hickey's 59th-minute point secured Kilkenny opening-round victory over reigning champions Dublin at a windswept Nowlan Park on Saturday.

Billy Drennan got the Cats off to a flyer before Luke Swan and Ben McSweeney struck goals to seize the momentum.

Swan struck the first, hitting home from close range on 21 minutes before McSweeney followed just two minutes later. Their efforts helped the visitors lead by 2-5 to 0-7 at half-time.

Drennan led the Kilkenny rally after the break to bring it back to level terms before Dublin crept ahead again.

Peter McDonald and Hickey, however, were on hand to see Kilkenny prevail at the death.

Up next for them is a clash with Wexford in Enniscorthy this weekend.
