Kilkenny cruise to opening win over Laois in Walsh Cup
Kilkenny 6-24 Laois 1-11
KILKENNY got their 2018 season up and running with a facile win over Laois.
Brian Cody’s 18th season in charge of the Cats could hardly have begun in easier fashion, as his makeshift Kilkenny side ran riot against the hosts in O’Moore Park.
Paddy Purcell’s fourth-minute goal had given Laois a brief glimmer of hope in the opening exchanges but it would prove to be a false dawn for the O’Moore men.
Kilkenny took their time to get going, with their shooting particularly poor in the opening 20 minutes or so, but once they got dialled in it was one-way traffic. Conor Martin got their first goal in the 10th minute, with Chris Bolger adding another not long after.
Laois had kept the gap to five in the run-up to the interval but Kilkenny hit 1-4 without reply in the closing seven minutes of the half, the goal coming from Richie Reid, to lead 3-8 to 1-5 at the changeover.
Kilkenny picked up where they left off in the second half, scoring 2-7 without response from the hosts. Reid got his second goal while John Donnelly also raised a green flag, with the Cats going through the motions for the rest of the game.
Sean Hennessy got Kilkenny’s sixth goal in injury time as they claimed a 28-point victory.
