Joe Canning watch: Great start but Galway's star man petered out badly
Joe Canning ended up with 1-8 for the losing side but after a bright opening Anthony Cunningham's talismatic forward was almost anonymous in the second period.
Canning was criticised for not coming out more in the second 35 minutes to get on more ball when the Tribesmen were clearly suffering.
Here's how the game transpired for the number 14.
1 min: Cillian Buckley penalised for a foul and Canning opens the scoring from just outside the 45.
4 min: Joe Canning shows Joey Holden a clean pair of heels and slots over his first point from play.
8 min: Conor Whelan gets it out to Joe and he slotted a third point.
12 min: The Portumna man fires his fourth from a free. A dream start for the full-forward.
17 min: Conor Whelan fails to put Canning through on goals but is fouled and Joe splits the posts. Levelled the score at 0-7 to 1-4.
20 mins: Canning opts to let Jason Flynn take a free from their own 65 and he scored it.
21 min: Canning pressure forces Eoin Larkin into taking steps. He puts Galway in front from the free. 1-5 to 0-9.
26 min: Canning receives attention but is fine to continue.
34 min: Beautiful shot over his left shoulder and Canning has his seventh. Drifting out from his full-forward position. 1-8 to 0-14
55 min: Gets into a wrestling match after losing out on the ball.
62 min: His attempted pass is intercepted but Conor Fogarty is penalised and Canning missed the resultant free. Big miss.
66 min: Makes amends for his miss with a pointed free.
70 min: Fires a late free to the net but it was too little to late.
