Inter county stars shine as WIT book Fitzgibbon Cup quarter final place
WIT 2-22 DCU 1-12
2015 runners-up WIT outclassed DCU at Carriganore tonight to qualify for the Fitzgibbon Cup quarter finals.
Colm Bonnar's charges led all the way with Liam McGrath and Austin Gleeson in sparkling form up front. Dead ball specialist McGrath nailed ten points while Gleeson claimed four from play.
Green flags from Johnny Hayes and Jack Langton eased them ten points clear by half time (2-12 to 0-8). A determined burst from Gleeson on 14 minutes allowed Hayes scamper clear of three defenders and flick the sliotar to the net.
Five minutes later, Langton's point effort from midfield dipped and DCU number one Cormac Ryan carried it over the line. All six forwards got on the scoreboard by the interval, spearheaded by McGrath. Wing forward Killian Fitzgerald impressed for DCU with three points from play.
On 40 minutes, Cathal Curran buried a penalty to the top corner after Peter Hogan was fouled. Danny Sutcliffe also smashed the crossbar but they could only get within eight points. Gleeson and McGrath completed the job for WIT. They ran out thirteen point victors and could afford the luxury of striking fourteen wides.
