'I should have nailed it' - Joe Canning on the last-minute free from that would have forced a replay in the All-Ireland final
Galway legend Joe Canning has claimed that he mis-hit his final free in this year's All-Ireland final defeat to Limerick.
He admitted that effort, that was between his own 45 and 65, was at the edge of his range but he should have 'nailed it'.
The 29-year-old has been the catalyst for a late fightback from Galway after Limerick had dominated the game.
The Tribesen looked dead and buried when Shane Dowling's goal put eight in it with three minutes of normal time remaining but they summoned one last effort and goals from Conor Whelan and Canning brought them back to within a point but Canning's last-gasp free dropped short and they relinquished their crown.
"I should have got it. I wouldn't have went back if I didn't think I'd get it," he told Off The Ball.
"I probably tried to hit it too hard and I kinda mis-hit it a little bit.
"If I connected sweetly with it, it would have went over. It dropped in the square. There was only another three or four yards or whatever and that's the frustating thing.
"If I had have connected sweetly, who knows? But it would have been daylight robbery."
