'I just don't know why he does stuff like that' - Davy Fitzgerald takes aim at Ger Loughnane
Davy Fitzgerald has blasted former All-Ireland winning manager Ger Loughnane for making the stiff task of beating Galway even tougher with his comments.
Loughnane was heavily critical of the Tribesmen following their Leinster final defeat to Kilkenny, a performance he described as 'gutless'.
It led to stinging retorts from the likes of Ollie Canning and Fitzgerald is far from pleased that his former boss has given Galway manager Micheál Donoghue further fuel for motivating his side for their quarter-final clash.
"Ger must of had a fair idea Clare could end up playing Galway in the next match. And for a Clare man to say that, it's, Jesus, it's tough enough for us to beat Galway without thinking that that's what we think," Davy Fitzgerald told Off The Ball on Newstalk.
"Them Galway lads have been to two All-Irelands in 2012 and 2015. They've won a Leinster championship, like. That's not a bad return. There isn't too many teams in the country that have that return.
"I'll always have great time for Ger Loughnane for what he did for us in Clare. Sometimes I just don't know why he does stuff like that, whether it's to keep in the media or something like that.
"Certainly, for myself and the Clare management, I don't think we agree with that. And I think the facts stand for themselves. If you reach two All-Ireland finals and win a Leinster, you can't be a really bad team."
Fitzgerald also took aim at local media in Clare for their analysis of his team, which he described as 'horrendous'
"It's something I wouldn't be happy about," he added
"We're not a county that has won a rake of All-Irelands so they shouldn't think that because you've won two or three under-21s it naturally gives you a God given right that we should be winning All-Irelands every year.
"Yes, we have a decent team. Other teams. Limerick, Galway have minors and under-21s.
"We've won six things with this team and the previous 14 years Clare won one thing.
"It's hard to believe the Galways, the Kilkennys, the Tipps, Waterfords and the Limericks without getting pressure from your own crowd all the time.
"Analysts just have a cut for the sake of having a cut. I don't understand that - that wouldn't be for me."
