For the second week in a row Offaly needed a late surge to save them from an embarrassing defeat in the Walsh Cup.

But even though they finally overcame the challenge of Kildare (2-22; 2-20), they were eliminated from the tournament as they needed to win by six points or more in order to overtake Group 4 leaders IT Carlow.

The Faithful County needed a last-minute goal to salvage a draw with IT Carlow last weekend.

So now the students, managed by ex-Kilkenny star DJ Carey, will meet Galway – who beat Laois - in the semi-final.

However, all eyes will be on next Sunday’s other penultimate tie in which Wexford will have home advantage against Kilkenny.

It will be the first sideline contest between Cats boss Brian Cody and newly-appointed Wexford manager Davy Fitzgerald – his side secured a place in the last four when they beat Dublin on Thursday night.

Kilkenny are the form team in the competition. A brace of goals each from Walter Walsh and Jonjo Farrell saw them brush aside the challenge of Westmeath.

Clare beat Waterford in the Munster Senior League but there is a doubt over whether they will fulfill the midweek fixture under lights against unbeaten Cork because of squad members’ involvement in the Fitzgibbon Cup.

Limerick kept alive their chances of reaching the final when they completed their programme with a facile win over Kerry.
