Counties competing in Division One of the National Hurling League next season have been given another incentive to win the competition after it was announced that the victors will take on Galway in an exhibition match in Australia in 2018.

President Michael D Higgins announced the challenge match during his ongoing state visit of Australia today. The last three winners of the National League have come from Division 1B, with Galway comprehensively beating Tipperary in last spring's decider, after which they claimed their first All-Ireland title in 29 years.

Australian ambassador to Ireland Richard Andrews welcomed the news on social media.
