UCD 1-17 Cork IT 1-12
UCD pulled away in the final quarter to claim an ultimately comfortable victory at Billings Park in Belfield last night.
Without playing with any level of consistent fluency, the hosts always looked in control of matters against a Cork outfit that undermined their challenge throughout with poor shot selection and marksmanship.
Waterford's DJ Foran proved the key attacker for UCD, accruing 1-8 over the hour, with his goal in the 54th minute effectively settling the issue.
It was Foran who opened the scoring in the fourth minute, punishing the visitors for their errant shooting.
Cork IT eventually gained reward for their efforts through a brace of frees from Michael Kearney but a run of four unanswered points edged the hosts three points clear by the end of the first quarter.
Darren Codd and Seamus Flanagan pushed UCD further ahead before the visitors were handed a lifeline in the 24th minute when Kearney's excellent run culminated in a fine finish from Andrew Coffey past Darragh Hughes.
Kearney's penalty that blazed over Hughes' crossbar four minutes later could well have turned the tide in Cork's favour but they entered the break trailing by 0-9 to 1-5.
They improved upon the restart with early scores from Patrick Collins and Michael Cahalane, but UCD gradually got back on top and slowly reaffirmed their control thanks to points by James Maher and Codd.
