Higgins inspires Mayo to success
Mayo 0-13 Derry 0-10
A strong breeze at Celtic Park made for a real game of two halves as Mayo came from behind to beat Derry.
The Oak Leafers raced into an early six-point lead with Alan Grant, Oisin McCloskey and Paul Cleary pointing before goalkeeper Michael Kirkpatrick nailed a free from his own 45.
The outstanding Keith Higgins opened his side's account before Shane Boland and Darragh Cartin traded frees. Niall Smyth and another Grant free ensured Derry led at the break by 0-9 to 0-3.
Mayo hit 10 unanswered points with Cathal Freeman, Boland and Higgins leading the charge.
Higgins shot over from the narrowest of angles to level the game for the first time since the opening minutes.
Substitute Kenny Feeney put his side ahead from long range before extending the lead to two after winning the very next puck-out.
The home side were reduced to 14 men with four minutes left as Liam Murphy saw red before Higgins put the icing on the cake for Derek Walsh's men.
