Gillane on song as Treaty advance
Limerick 5-22 Carlow 0-13
Limerick had little trouble reaching the All-Ireland quarter-final where they'll face either Galway or Kilkenny, but this was a formality at Netwatch Cullen Park.
The losers from today's replayed Leinster final await next weekend and John Kiely will be confident that his side are in good shape after Aaron Gillane led his troops to victory.
Gillane scored one goal, laid on another and showed some excellent touches in his first start following his sending off against Cork earlier this summer.
Limerick got off to a flyer when Kyle Hayes found the net with a firm, low shot after 30 seconds, but the next ten minutes were bossed by Colm Bonnar's side and Denis Murphy and Edward Byrne points put one between the teams.
But following a great Tom Morrissey point in the 12th minute Limerick found their flow. They moved from a three to a six-point lead when Cian Lynch and Gillane sent Graeme Mulcahy in for their second goal, while a minute later Gillane finished from a tight angle to push Limerick well clear.
The two goals in the space of a minute were decisive but Carlow didn't help themselves either, and a return of four points from 13 attempts before the break illustrated their wastefulness.
With Declan Hannon and Lynch quenching any Carlow attacks, Gillane, Tom Morrissey and Gearoid Hegarty benefited and a 3-9 to 0-4 half-time lead was reached with relative ease.
Limerick were far from perfect though and the ten wides they hit before the interval will have to be improved upon when they take on Galway or Kilkenny.
John Michael Nolan and Murphy hit early points for Carlow after the break, but they continued to stray off target too, and after Peter Casey and Seamus Flanagan hit their first points of the game, Limerick cruised to victory.
