DAVY FITZGERALD'S call for a delay to Friday's independent.ie Fitzgibbon Cup semi-final is expected to fall on deaf ears.

Higher Education GAA chiefs indicated last night that while any formal request to defer Limerick IT's last-four clash with University of Limerick would have to be considered, it is unlikely to succeed.

Fitzgerald appealed for breathing space after his team, weekend hosts of the competition, defeated IT Carlow by four points in a heated quarter-final in dreadful conditions.

The backdrop to this last-eight showdown was, of course, the eligibility row involving IT Carlow's James Gannon that delayed the fixture.

LIT have less just three full days to recover while opponents UL will surely be fresher having beaten UCD last week.

Fitzgerald insisted that LIT would have no trouble putting back the staging of the final until the middle of next week.

And he said: "I'd encourage the CA (Comhairle Ardoideachais) to have a right look at the weekend.

"I don't think we'd have a chance if we played again on Friday, with the effort we've put in today. UL will have had no game for a week and a half. It's a big ask."

David Reidy scored 1-8 for LIT in a tie that saw both sides reduced to 14 men.

In the first half, LIT's Alan Dempsey was red-carded before IT Carlow's Charles Dwyer followed suit.

Reidy scored the decisive goal in the 20th minute and opted for a point from a second-half penalty. With five minutes remaining, IT Carlow's Ian Byrne saw his penalty saved as DJ Carey's men searched for a way back into the game.
