Monaghan opened their campaign with a four-point victory over Longford at a blustery Pearse Park.

The Farney men were helped somewhat when Longford's full-forward Sean Stakelum was issued a second yellow card after a careless challenge with less than ten minutes left.

Up to that point, the game was in the melting pot, but once the visitors had the numerical advantage, they turned the screw, landing four unanswered points.

Fergal Rafter finished with a personal tally of eight points for the winners, while Mark Treanor and Conor Flynn also played key roles in a hard-fought victory.

Cathal Mullane kept Longford in contention while Patrick Walsh and John Mulhern picked off some glorious points for the home side who trailed by three at the break.
