Leitrim used the extra man well for the last 11 minutes of this entertaining encounter on Saturday when overcoming a determined 14-man Cavan challenge at Carrick-on-Shannon.

Leitrim were on top early on thanks to goals by Clement Cunniffe and Colm Moreton.

But Cavan rallied strongly as Diarmuid Carney put over five frees and Jack Barry fired home a well-executed goal to put themselves back in the match.

It was still level seven minutes into the second half as Leitrim's Cathal O'Donovan and Moreton traded points with Cavan's Carney who hit the target with two frees.

Karl McDermott and Stephen Goldrick landed points to edge Leitrim ahead by the 46th minute.

Cavan were out-gunned after that but the Breffni cause suffered a further blow when full-forward Kevin Conneely received a straight red in the 59th minute.

After the narrow success, a jubilant Leitrim manager Martin Cunniffe said: "In fairness, we deserved that win, we are still in the competition".
