The Antrim minor hurlers proved too strong for Westmeath when the two Leinster Championship Tier 2 first round losers met at sun-drenched Abbotstown on Saturday.

The wind-assisted Ulster side led by 1-13 to 0-5 at the break, their goal coming in the 12th minute courtesy of Caoimhin Duffin, who finished well for what proved to be a score that Westmeath never recovered from.

With Rian McMullan and Seamus McAuley scoring some delightful points on the change of ends, the result was never in doubt.

Fiontain McQuillan scored their second goal when he bundled the ball home in the 45th minute and it looked like any score was possible at that stage.

Westmeath, for whom midfielder Shane Williams excelled throughout, took the gloomy look off the scoreboard with goals from Brian Farrell and sub Conor Murphy in the 44th and 49th minutes respectively, but from very early in proceedings, this result was never in doubt.
