Doyle twins give Wicklow that sinking feeling
Westmeath 5-19 Wicklow 0-4
They might have found it hard to find the venue but the Westmeath Minor hurlers had no trouble locating their rhythm as they obliterated their Wicklow opponents in the Ballinakill Centre of Excellence in the hills over Rathdrum on Saturday.
The opening game of the Leinster Minor Hurling Championship showed the gulf between the counties, and Wicklow now drop to the 'B' championship while Westmeath face Carlow this weekend.
The story of the game was the performance of twins, Ciaran and Killian Doyle, who were started in the half-forward line and who dominated the game.
Killian finished with 2-09 to his credit while Ciaran contributed 1-04, with corner-forward Paddy Doody slamming home the other pair of goals.
Wicklow's Enda Donohue pointed his side's only score of the first half in the third minute from a free. After that it was all Westmeath with Ciaran Doyle, Fionn Dowd, Doody, Killian Doyle and full-forward John McCarthy getting on the score sheet to make it 2-12 to 0-01 at the break.
The visitors refused to let up in the second period and, although lacking the fluidity of the first half, they were too good for Wicklow who were best represented by Enda Donohue and 'keeper Conor McNally.
Early second-half goals from Paddy Doody and Killian Doyle made it 4-14 to 0-02 and from there the Westmeath side cantered to a 5-19 to 0-04 victory.
