Westmeath hurling manager Joe Quaid praised his charges after they kept their Joe McDonagh Cup hopes alive with a convincing win over Antrim at Dunloy on Saturday.

The Lake County came into the game on the back of a surprise defeat to Kerry two weeks ago while Antrim saw off Offaly last week, meaning they needed a win to secure a place in the Croke Park decider on 30 June.

But it was Westmeath who looked the form team, never allowing Antrim to get into their stride to all but secure a place in the final against Laois.

Quaid said: "Against Kerry we just didn't work hard enough, we didn't bring enough intensity. We were waiting to see if there would be a kick out of these boys against Antrim and there was.

"It's probably the most controlled aggressive performance I've seen from them since I've taken over."

Quaid's side were helped by the unerring accuracy of Killian Doyle, with the Raharney man finishing with 17 points, five from play, in a workmanlike win for Westmeath.

Antrim lost Matthew Donnelly and David Kearney to red cards in the second half, but the visitors already had the game in the bag by the 58th- and 75th-minute dismissals.
