Westmeath pulled away in the final 10 minutes at Netwatch Cullen Park yesterday, the Lake County recording the game's final four points to deservedly get their campaign off to a winning start.

The sides were level on 10 occasions and deadlocked at 0-8 apiece at half-time. At that stage Westmeath were down to 14 men, having lost right half-back Aaron Craig to a straight red card on the half-hour for a striking offence on a Carlow player.

Carlow edged 0-11 to 0-9 ahead early in the second-half, but then lost substitute James Doyle to a straight red.

Ultimately Westmeath were the better side, with team captain Tommy Doyle, Derek McNicholas, the roving Robbie Greville and full-forward Killian Doyle all prominent.

Killian Doyle rounded off the Westmeath victory with a superb injury-time point during play from long distance -his fourth point, all from play.
