Dominant Scotland shut out Ireland in shinty slaughter
Shinty-Hurling International: Scotland 5-11 Ireland 0-4
Scotland's dominance of the Senior Shinty-Hurling International goes on, after they delivered a 22-point win over Ireland in wet conditions in Abbotstown on Saturday.
The visitors held Ireland scoreless in the closing 30 minutes and were more accurate and goal-hungry throughout. Ireland opened brightly, but had half of their tally after just four minutes, with wides proving costly.
The hosts, managed by Cuala boss Willie Maher and Kilkenny's Conor Phelan, registered 14 wides over the 80 minutes - ten in the opening half - but they looked good early on.
Kildare's Paul Divilly and Donegal's Danny Cullen ensured a 0-2 to 0-0 lead after four minutes, but despite having the lion's share of the possession, they failed to make it count in the early stages. And Ireland 'keeper Brian Tracey was called into early action, pulling off a fine save from a Steven MacDonald goal shot.
Goals from Craig Morrison and substitute Andrew McCuish helped Scotland to a 2-3 to 0-3 interval lead. It got worse on the restart, Morrison firing his second goal 30 seconds in, before MacDonald got a two-pointer from a placed ball. Laois' Ryan Mullaney got Ireland's only second-half score, a 50th-minute free, but despite good efforts from him, Roscommon's Cillian Egan and skipper Cullen, Scotland drove on.
