DJ Carey’s IT Carlow side prove too strong for St Pat’s/Mater Dei in Fitzgibbon Cup
DJ Carey’s IT Carlow were good value for a nine-point win over a battling St Pat’s/Mater Dei.
Pat’s Patrick Curran opened the scoring with a goal inside the first 60 seconds, catching the Carlow defence cold under the high ball and curling the ball into Enda Rowland’s net.
Stephen Maher responded with an immediate point along with goals from Colin Dunford and Chris Bolger inside five minutes, giving Carlow IT a platform to build on, Jack Fagan’s neat handpass setting up Dunford’s third-minute goal.
Bolger smashed the ball into the net two minutes later after a scorching solo run. Dwane Palmer’s long ball was then gathered by Bolger to land Carlow’s third goal on 17 minutes.
Pat’s regrouped, making a game of it two minutes after the restart, having trailed by five points. Eoin McIntyre lost his marker Ross Brown to clip home Pat’s second goal. But Carey’s side showed composure and some of their manager’s old traits, as they surged home to eventually win by nine points, having led by a goal with 10 minutes to go, sub Tom Nolan goaling in stoppage time.
