Kilkenny legend DJ Carey will manager the Cats' U21 side next season, after being ratified at a county board meeting last night.

Carey replaces former team-mate Eddie Brennan, who stepped down from the post after leading Kilkenny to the All-Ireland U21 final this year, where they were defeated by Limerick.

Carey has already shown promise as a manager, guiding Carlow IT to the Fitzgibbon Cup final this year, where they were beaten by Mary I.

After a lean spell in Leinster by their standards, Kilkenny tasted provincial glory this season for the first time since 2012.

Carey won five All-Ireland titles during his playing days with Kilkenny, retiring after the All-Ireland final defeat to Cork in 2004.
