U-21 All-Ireland winning Limerick captain Diarmaid Byrnes led his LIT side to victory by the minimum over UCD in their Independent.ie Fitzgibbon Cup Group A clash at LIT.

The Limerick college looked in trouble as UCD began to fire the scores in the second-half and the hosts trailed by two with 15 minutes remaining.

But Byrnes took control and hit four points as his side drew clear. James Maher’s late goal looked to have sealed a draw for UCD, but Peter Duggan hit the winner deep into added-time.

UCD never took advantage of the elements in the first-half and despite playing with a strong breeze at their backs they only led 0-8 to 0-6 at half-time.

They rushed into a 0-5 to 0-1 lead early on, and when Oisin O’Rourke notched his third free they were 0-7 to 0-2 up.

LIT were missing too many opportunities at the other end but Byrnes notched a crucial score. And when Clare star David Reidy brought it back to just two points before the break, LIT were in a great position for the second-half.

However despite a four-point burst from Reidy, all from frees, Ross King, Maher and Sean Moran (two) ensured UCD stayed in front.

Joe Campion tied up the game at 0-13 to 0-13 with 13 minutes remaining. Substitute Tomas O’Leary answered that score and it wasn’t until Byrnes hit three points that LIT assumed control.

The 2005 and ’07 winners were 0-17 to 0-14 up entering added-time but Maher drove through the heart of LIT’s defence and goaled. However Duggan was on hand to clinch the victory.
