DCU send champions packing
DCU 0-20 Mary I 2-12
DCU midfielder Darren Mullen said that knocking out the champions and advancing to the semi-finals of the Fitzgibbon Cup is a huge boost to hurling in the university.
They were level eight times but DCU snatched victory at the death with two late points from Killian Doyle and Conor Burke to end Mary I's hopes of a third Fitzgibbon Cup title in a row.
"We have been building for the last few years so this is a special night," said Kilkenny man Mullen.
Mary I, forced to line out without injured Limerick player Aaron Gillane, had an early boost when Michael O'Loughlin found the net but with Dublin's Donal Burke in superb form, DCU deservedly led by 0-8 to 1-3 at the break.
Three points from Joe O'Connor pushed DCU ahead in the second half but a goal from a penalty by goalkeeper Eoghan Cahill helped get Mary I back on level terms but DCU finished strongly.
