Barry Cormack scored 0-15 and Martin Fitzgerald 3-3 as nine Kildare players got on the scoreboard in their facile victory over Roscommon in Newbridge.

Following a mediocre league campaign, Joe Quaid's Kildare were an unknown quantity.

But they surged into a 2-12 to 0-6 half-time lead, thanks to two goals and three points from Fitzgerald, after two Daniel Glynn points and Naos Connaughton's opener for the visitors.

Roscommon did show a brief glimpse of their potential by stringing together four late points before the break.

However, Cormack's frees and Fitzgerald's third goal in the 37th minute eased Kldare into a 4-15 to 0-6 lead before Shane Ryan's 45th-minute goal inflicted more punishment on the visitors.

Connaughton's 56th-minute goal was a consolation for Roscommon, while keeper Joe Keane and full-forward Robbie Fallon added frees to Glynn's four points.

Although Fitzgerald was taken off early, late points from Paul Divilly, Mick Purcell and Éanna O'Neill extended Kildare's winning margin to 25 points.
