Conneely earns second bite for Kildalkey
Kiltale 1-13 Kildalkey 1-13
Kiltale's hopes of a record-equalling six-in-a-row in the Royal County are still intact after they came from five points down to earn a replay in yesterday's SHC final at Páirc Tailteann.
The title holders did it the hard way after having Mark O'Sullivan sent off three minutes into the second half.
They hit a goal and three points in a five-minute spell to lead deep into added time only for Kildalkey to force a replay right at the death thanks to a long-range free from Paddy Conneely.
All the drama in an otherwise low-key affair came in the closing stages with substitute Noel Kirby giving Kildalkey a five-point lead, 1-12 to 0-10, following a goal on 57 minutes.
Kiltale responded with points from Jack Regan (free), and Peter Durnin before Regan fired home an equalising goal on the hour mark following a James Kelly sideline cut.
Regan then pointed his side ahead from a superb effort on the right wing but the champions were unable to hold on.
The opening half was a less hectic affair as Mark O'Sullivan pointed Kiltale ahead inside 20 seconds. However, for most of the remainder of the half it was the outsiders who edged the exchanges as they kept a tight rein on Kiltale's attack.
Paddy Conneely was unerring from placed balls, converting five efforts as Kildalkey led 0-8 to 0-6 at half-time.
Kiltale were unable to find anything close to their best form and they went three points behind early in the second half.
However, Regan ensured that they stayed in contention prior to that dramatic finish.
