Conlon goals pave way for NUIG
NUI Galway manager Tony Ward was happy that his side turned over a half-time deficit to avoid a shock defeat at Dangan in Galway.
NUI Galway 4-14 St Pat's 1-12
The hosts trailed 0-11 to 0-9 at half-time in this Group B tie, but had the breeze in the second half and goals from Sam Conlon (two), Conor Cleary and Kevin McHugo helped them over the line, with Criostoir Breathnach scoring a consolation for St Pat's.
"We were poor in the first half. We upped that in the second half and we had our few chances and took them," said Ward.
William Ryan scored six points in the first half when St Pat's were on top but a fortuitous Cleary goal in the 37th minute sent NUIG on their way.
McHugo struck three minutes later, and Conlon scored his goals in the 57th and 63rd minutes.
"It was tight up until they scored their first goal and that was the turning point in the game, goals win games," said St Pat's player/manager Patrick Spellacy.
