Waterford eased past Kerry in this dead rubber Munster Senior Hurling League clash at the Fitzgerald Stadium in Killarney on Saturday afternoon.

Waterford were always in control in the opening half, thanks to the free-taking of Maurice Shanahan, as Kerry struggled up front, to score from play. Waterford led 0-10 to 0-3 at the interval with Kerry's tally coming from Shane Nolan's placed balls.

Kerry welcomed back Patrick Kelly from Clarecastle who, last week was cleared to play with the Kingdom in 2016 but, playing his first game in six months, saw him being replaced at half-time.

Kerry improved in the second half with John Griffin, Thomas Casey and Keith Carmody to the fore, and four Philip Lucid points from frees kept the scoreline respectable. Waterford, with Patrick Curran and Colin Dunford impressing, moved clear, and were denied three goals by Kerry keeper Martin Stackpoole who made some superb saves.

Kerry boss Ciaran Carey said: "I thought we were poor enough in the first half, especially with our delivery.

"We started off well, though our options would not have been the best. The second half was a lot more pleasing and we are happy enough."
