Caulfield and Kennedy lead comeback for Pres Athenry
All-Ireland PPS Senior A Hurling semi-final: Pres Athenry 4-10 Kilkenny CBS 2-12
Presentation College Athenry manager Mike Finn was thrilled with his side's character after launching a stunning second-half comeback against Kilkenny CBS.
The Galway school will face either Ardscoil Rís or St Kieran's College in the Post-Primary Schools hurling final, after they came back from a 2-9 to 1-2 half-time deficit.
Adam Brett found the net in the first-half for Pres, but goals from Luke Hogan and Jamie Ryan meant Kilkenny CBS were in control. However, Eoin Caulfield scored two goals and Mark Kennedy's 1-3 completed a brilliant second-half showing.
"We were happy enough at half-time. Even though they got away from us a on the scoring a bit, we were winning the middle third," said Finn. "We were fairly confident that if we stayed doing that in the second-half the scores would come and they did."
Kennedy opened the scoring in the third minute but that was cancelled out by Conor Heary, before Hogan scored his goal in the seventh minute.
Brett scored his goal 12 minutes before the interval but Ryan rifled a second Kilkenny goal in the 23rd minute after a goalmouth scramble.
Kilkenny CBS scored four unanswered points before half-time and Ryan put them 11 points clear just after the break.
But then Pres began to wreak havoc in their full forward line and Caulfield and Kennedy hit goals in the 44th and 49th minutes.
Conor Drennan scored his sixth point but Kilkenny CBS couldn't stem the flow, and Eoin O'Donnell gave Pres the lead in the 58th minute, before Caulfield's second goal.
