Mooncoin kept Kilkenny's grip on the championship when they beat Ratoath (Meath) at Nowlan Park on Saturday to claim the county's 10th title in 11 seasons.
Ratoath were very game during the opening half and early points from captain Gavin McGowan and Padraig O'Hanrahan (0-2 each) helped them into a 0-4 to 0-3 lead after 12 minutes.
Ratoath were rocked when Mooncoin full-forward Eamon Hennebry fielded a high ball and blasted it to the net in the 24th minute.
Leading by a point at the break (1-7 to 0-9), Mooncoin then took off in the second half. Subs Alan Walsh and Paul Hennebry were lively throughout, and both got in on the scoring act as Mooncoin picked off four points in quick succession. Kevin Crowley and Ray Wall nabbed the other points as the Cats raced into a 1-12 to 0-10 lead with 15 minutes to play.
They never looked back.
