Carlow hurlers recovered from a dreadful start to carve out a draw against NUIG in this entertaining Walsh Cup tie at Dr Cullen Park, with Paul Coady levelling matters for the home team in injury time from a 30-metre free.

NUIG started this game as if they would blow away the opposition, up 1-2 to no score by the fifth minute.

Slowly Carlow gained a foothold in the game with Eddie Byrne opening their account with a neat point from play in the 7th minute before they fell into further arrears when Bobby Duggan's free from inside his own '65 was allowed to slip into the home net.

Carlow rallied strongly and were right back in the game when Edward Coady shot a fine goal.

Carlow dominated the remainder of the half, but went in 2-8 to 1-4 down at the break.

After the break, Carlow reeled off seven points to level matters by the 48th minute but were never able to hit the front. The students responded and points from Stephen Hynes and Niall O'Brien put them two points clear, but Carlow refused to wilt and grabbed a late draw.
