A resurgent Monaghan booked their place in the Nicky Rackard Cup semi-finals at the expense of a much-fancied but wasteful Donegal side in this keenly contested quarter-final in Inniskeen on Saturday.

Donegal got off to a flying start with a goal in the opening minute from Gerard Gilmore and they went on to dominate the opening quarter. However, they just weren't clinical enough in front of the posts on their way to 15 wides.

Having only opened their account in the 20th minute, and lucky to still be in the contest, the Farney men gradually worked their way into the game and with Fergal Rafter and Brian McGuigan finding their scoring touch, only a point separated the sides at the break as Donegal led 1-5 to 0-7.

Monaghan were a different side upon the resumption, with Mark Treanor in inspirational form at midfield as the home side lay down the gauntlet to the visitors.

With Rafter, who assumed the free-taking duties in the absence of Donal Meegan, repeatedly finding his range as Donegal's indiscipline hurt their cause, Monaghan gradually got themselves on top.

And once they got their noses in front through Tadhg Campbell's goal, they weren't going to be caught, as Division 3A league winners Donegal could find no way back into the contest.
