DIT manager Derek Brennan hailed his troops after they saw off a fancied UCD side to reach the semi-finals of the Fitzgibbon Cup. And with a clash to come with DCU next weekend, one of them will reach the third-level hurling final for the first time.

"It went right down to the wire as we expected it would. Luckily enough on the night we came out on the right side of it," Brennan said.

Hero of the night for them was Westmeath sharp-shooter Niall O'Brien, who landed 0-11.

UCD, although far too dependent on DJ Foran for scores, finished the half in front by 0-11 to 0-8.

When the Waterford player, who finished with 0-13, extended that gap shortly after the restart it seemed they were poised for a semi showdown with DCU.

But DIT never panicked. Niall Walsh and O'Brien pointed and it was 0-13 apiece after 40 minutes.

Two points from Foran edged UCD back in front but DIT pushed for home with three frees from O'Brien.

Dublin's Conor Ryan sealed the win with a sideline.
