Brenan goal puts Sligo in driving seat
Sligo 1-14 Fermanagh 1-9
Sligo gained a measure of revenge for their Lory Meagher Cup final defeat to Fermanagh last year with an impressive five-point win at Markievicz Park yesterday.
The Yeats men were on top from start to the finish, and were good value for the win, particularly as they spent over 30 minutes with a man less following Brian O'Loughlin's red card - for a second yellow - just five minutes after the restart.
The home side had given themselves enough breathing space by half-time, with Ciaran Brenan's superb goal close to the break putting them into a six-point led, 1-7 to 0-4.
Two long-range frees from Cormac Behan, added to four points from Keith Raymond, meant the hosts were already on top before Raymond and Rory Brennan combined to release the full-forward to net.
Fermanagh were given a lifeline early in the second half as John Duffy's free dropped short and Declan McGarry's shot deceived Sean Clancy in the Sligo goal.
They almost got a second in similar circumstances soon after only for Gavin Feely to clear off the line, while another effort hit the foot of the post shortly after O'Loughlin was sent off.
With Sean Kenny hitting a vital point at the other end, the home side were able to secure the win.
