Derek McGrath is set to stay on as Waterford hurling manager in 2018.

After a two-month period of reflection since their All-Ireland final defeat to Galway, McGrath has confirmed that he will extend his time in charge to a fifth year.

It was widely expected that 2017 would be his final season in charge but the strong bond developed with his squad and the sense of unfinished business may have influenced his decision to remain.

Management had been in talks with the county board over the funding of a team holiday but any obstacle that presented now appears to have been cleared. Waterford are expected to convey McGrath's decision today.

Elsewhere, it has been confirmed Thurles will host the Munster club SHC final between Na Piarsaigh and Ballygunner on Sunday week.
