Cork held their nerve to land the inaugural All-Ireland U-17 hurling title at Croke Park yesterday.

The young Rebels ran out two-point winners against 14-man Dublin - with many of the players involved set to meet again next Sunday in a minor semi-final.

Dublin lost Tom Aherne in the 42nd minute to a second yellow card, but died with their boots on.

Dublin goalkeeper Eddie Gibbons rattled home a first-half penalty, but sent a repeat effort in the 37th minute hurtling over the bar.

His 20th-minute goal was cancelled out by Joe Stack's 28th-minute strike for Cork, as the young Rebels led by 1-9 to 1-8 at the break.

When Aherne was sent off Dublin were two points down, before John Considine stretched the gap to three points.

Dublin got within one eight minutes from time, but the Leesiders held out.
