Former All-Ireland-winning defender Kevin Martin is the new manager of the Offaly hurlers.

Martin, who was wing-back on the Faithful teams that lifted Liam MacCarthy in 1994 and 1998, has recruited Tullamore club-mate Damian Fox as coach/selector and former county team-mate Aidan Hanrahan as selector.

Martin was player-manager when his native Tullamore ended a 46-year wait to win the Offaly senior hurling championship in 2009.

He was appointed Westmeath hurling manager in 2009, his only inter-county job to-date, and led the county to a Christy Ring Cup title in 2010. However, he was sacked abruptly early in 2011.

Meanwhile, Rhode clubman Brian Darby is the latest Offaly footballer to announce his retirement from inter-county football. Darby made his debut for the county back in 2007.
