Wicklow missed out on a glorious opportunity to open their league campaign with a win against Waterford when their teenage free taker Gearoid Murphy pushed a free for victory right and wide late in this Division 4 clash.

Momentum shifted from one side to the other throughout the match, Waterford led by four points to one in the twelfth minute and looked like they would take a big lead into half time with the wind at their backs.

It was level however at five points each as Wicklow dominated the rest of the half while also dropping three shots short. Their tackling was wonderful, fourteen turnovers in the first half alone, while they also won seven of Waterford's eight kick-outs. They continued their good play in the second half, kicking four unanswered points in the opening seven minutes.

But Waterford responded in no uncertain terms, kicking five without reply, Jason Curry with three frees, to retake the lead by the 53rd minute as Wicklow's controlled tackling in the first half turned into indiscipline in the second.

Wicklow re-took the lead after hitting two further points but as the game entered added time Curry equalised.

Wicklow missed a couple of late chances to win and had to settle for a draw.
