Wexford on the way up

Wexford 0-18

WEXFORD took the honours and assured themselves of promotion with a win over Antrim at Casement Park.

The margin did little justice to the winners, who dominated matters for most of the game.

"We missed out on promotion twice recently because of score difference but, even with another round to go, we are now certain of stepping up. We play Longford next Sunday in the last round of the league and then we will play them in the Division 3 final.

"There is also a chance that we will meet them in the championship. It is fabulous that we have now clinched promotion," said manager Jason Ryan.

Wexford were dominant for most of the game but a closing spurt by the home side brought Antrim into contention, which they hardly deserved. That final fling was created despite the fact that the Saffrons were down to 13 players after Brian Neeson and Tony Scullion were both dismissed within 30 seconds.

Wexford's running off the ball was superb and they were yards faster than the home side. By half-time, they were 0-10 to 0-5 ahead.

With Redmond Barry, Ben Brosnan, Ciaran Lyng and PJ Banville busy in attack, Wexford led 0-13 to 0-7 after 50 minutes before Antrim rallied.

However, Michael Magill then fired a rocket to the Wexford net and when Michael McCann pointed a minute later, 19 minutes from time, it was Wexford 0-14 Antrim 1-9.

That was before the double dismissal. The Saffrons' only other score was a goal from the penalty spot by McCann as Wexford hit four points to polish off the opposition.
